Man and woman dead in horror highway crash near Ballina

UPDATE THURSDAY 8.30am: SENIOR police officers said the two people who died in a horror car crash on Wednesday afternoon were yet to be formally identified they can reveal their ages and gender.

Richmond Police District Inspector Darren Cloake confirmed that the pair who died when their Toyota sedan and a semi-trailer crashed on the Pacific Hwy near Uralba, were thought to be from the same family.

"We believe a 22-year-old man and 53-year-old woman were related to other," he said.

"But they have not yet been formally identified."

It is not known if the pair were from the region.

UPDATE: POLICE investigating a horror crash on the Pacific Highway say the two people who were killed may have been local residents.

Richmond Police District Inspector David Vandergriend said emergency services were called to the scene just before 1pm.

"Just before 1pm today police were called to an incident on the Pacific Highway at West Ballina, where a truck and a car collided, resulting in the truck busring in to flames

"The truck driver managed to escape from the truck and the flames.

"Unfortunately the two passengers in the car suffered critical injuries.

"We're still investigating the scene and determining exactly the cause of the crash."

Insp Vandergriend said police had not yet formally identified the people who were killed.

"We believe they're possibly local, the deceased, but that's yet to be confirmed," he said.

Crash investigators, with a drone, are still at the scene.

Insp Vandergriend said northbound lanes of the highway were still closed, with intermittent closures on the southbound lanes, which could continue for several hours.

UPDATE 3pm: POLICE have confirmed two people have died after a head-on collision south of Ballina today.

Just before 1pm, emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway at Pimlico, 17km south of Ballina, after reports a Toyota sedan had collided with a semi-trailer.

Following the crash, the semi-trailer caught fire. The blaze has since been extinguished.

The two occupants of the sedan died at the scene. Their ages are not known at this time and they have not been formally identified.

The male driver of the semi-trailer was taken to Ballina Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to Richmond Police District established a crime scene and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

North bound lanes on the Pacific Highway remain closed, with traffic being diverted through Coraki.

South bound lanes will open shortly at a reduced speed.

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the crash to come forward.

UPDATE 2.11PM: POLICE have established a crime scene at a serious vehicle crash on the Pacific Hwy at West Ballina this afternoon.

According to a Transport Management NSW spokeswoman, the Pacific Hwy is currently closed in both directions with diversions in place.

The diversions could remain for some hours while police remain at the established crime scene for an investigation.

"Diversions are out to clear traffic which was caught behind the crash," she said.

"Once the northbound traffic will be cleared, both northbound lanes will remain closed.

"One southbound lane will be open for traffic in a southbound direction only."

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and check


Northbound from Woodburn: Woodburn-Coraki Rd to Coraki. Coraki Rd, Bruxner Hwy via Lismore to West Ballina and back to Pacific Hwy.

Southbound From West Ballina: Bruxner Hwy via Lismore, Coraki Rd to Coraki, Woodburn-Coraki Rd to Woodburn and back to Pacific Hwy.

Drivers are advised to use diversions and to allow for extra travel time.

UPDATE, 1.45pm: SENIOR police are at the scene of a serious crash at West Ballina.

A Police NSW spokeswoman confirmed that senior officers from the Richmond Police District were at the scene of the crash, which involved a truck and car.

She said the incident occurred south of Ballina, near Pimlico, but said was too early to comment on how the incident occurred.

"It's too early to ascertain what happened," she said.

"We do not yet know which vehicle was at fault."

UPDATE, 1.35pm: A SPOKESMAN from NSW Ambulance media says the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter has now been called off from attending the crash on the Pacific Highway.

The southbound lanes of the highway are closed.

Live Traffic NSW has reported heavy traffic conditions in the area.


Original story: THE Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter has been called to attend two critically injured people at the scene of  crash on the Pacific Hwy at West Ballina near the Bruxner Hwy.

An spokesman from NSW Ambulance media said three road ambulances were currently at the crash.

"The fire brigade has also been tasked as the truck is on fire," he said.

"The rescue helicopter from Lismore is on its way to the crash.

"A truck and car crashed on the southbound side of the Pacific Hwy."

He said the call came in just before 1pm.
