UPDATE: CLOTHES and "biological matter" believed to be human remains have been found beside an isolated Port Douglas creek where it is feared Anne Cameron may have been taken by a crocodile.
Police believe the 79-year-old, who suffers from dementia, may have wandered into the dense terrain just south of the Ozcare aged care facility where she was staying and become disoriented.
Far North police Acting Insp Ed Lukin said clothing and a walking stick with her name on it, along with the remains were discovered during a search of the small creek this morning.
He said the remains were undergoing forensic testing in Cairns to identify whether they were human.
Police say they will continue to search in hopes that she may still be alive, but hold grave concerns.
"Because of the proximity of these items and this unknown material located by this creek bank we cannot rule out a croc attack," Acting Insp Lukin said.
"We still hold out hope that we will find this missing person alive. Of course as the days progress that option will diminish and as time goes by we will continue to reassess our searching options.
He said Department of Environment and Heritage Protection officers would patrol the area tonight "in the event that there has been a croc involved in this missing person".
Police have called on the public to stay away from the area which is at the southern end of Four Mile Beach.
Acting Insp Lukin said he did not wish to comment on how Ms Cameron's family were coping, but confirmed they had been notified of what had been found.
She had only recently moved to the aged care facility after relocating from Canberra and family were involved in the search since her disappearance on Tuesday afternoon.
EARLIER: Fears are held that an elderly woman missing near Port Douglas may have been taken by a crocodile.
Police have confirmed clothing has been found beside a small creek which runs off the Mowbray River.
The scene is understood to be about 2km from the Ozcare aged care facility where she was last seen on Tuesday.
The Mowbray River is the location of three sizeable crocodiles regularly seen by motorists travelling between Cairns and Port Douglas.
A major search has been underway since yesterday with the clothing items located at the isolated creek today.
Police are expected to give an update at 3.30pm.
