Oakey residents front massive pro-mine ad campaign

A MASSIVE advertising campaign featuring Oakey business owners supporting the New Acland Coal Mine will wrap up at the end of the week.

The multi-faceted Save Regional Towns campaign, which hit televisions, billboards, newspapers, websites and radio stations across Toowoomba and Brisbane this month, was paid for by the mine's owner New Hope after the company was approached by residents.

Oakey Chamber of Commerce president Andrew Langton, who features in the campaign, said the ads were focused on informing residents across the region about the risks posed if the Queensland Government didn't approve the expansion of the coal mine, which is due to run out of coal this year.

"We just need to highlight that this is important for our town, because it does flow down the line as well," he said.

"As far as I can remember, there are still a few days to go at the moment (for the campaign).

"We went to (New Hope) and asked if they could help us.

"The mine does affect Brisbane and everyone on the way out to Oakey."

One of the billboards in a key location in Brisbane, on William St in the CBD, was pulled down this week after complaints from tenants.

Mr Langton said the decision to take the billboard down was "disappointing".

"I was more disappointed that we as a regional town need to get the message out (and we can't)," he said.
