A NUMBER of horses are lucky to be alive after a fire destroyed a shed on Gap Rd at Alstonville early this morning.

Richmond Local Area Command Inspector Bill McKenna said the fire started about 4am.

He said the owner of the property, a 73-year-old man, looked out of his bedroom window and saw the machinery shed well alight.

He also heard the horses kicking at the stable doors, and a 5000 gallon tank also exploded.

The Alstonville fire brigade attended the scene, and the owners were treated for smoke inhalation.

Insp McKenna said equipment destroyed included farm equipment, a horse float, ride on mower and numerous tools, valued at more than $150,000.

Circumstances will be investigated by police and fire brigade.

Insp McKenna said the blaze was not believed to be suspicious.
