Firebird and crews attack blaze south of Mackay

AN AERIAL and ground attack has begun to contain a vegetation fire burning at Collaroy, 160km south of Mackay.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman sad two fire crews and a helicopter were at the blaze on Collaroy-Killarney Rd.

She said the fire had been burning for two hours, with the blaze initially reported at 2.10pm.

The Rural Fire Service said smoke could be affecting nearby residents and motorists.

"Residents should close their doors and windows and keep medication close by if suffering from a respiratory condition," a statement read.

"Motorists should use caution and drive to conditions."
